EXCLUSIVE: F&F Goes to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week – Part 1!

Posted on February 16, 2011

Feathers & Fringe had the amazing opportunity to attend Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City this past weekend!!  The experience was addicting and unforgettable; the designers were genius and inspirational.  With loud pounding music you can feel vibrating from the ground, stark white interiors, and blinding lights that can actually give you a tan – it was like a mesmirizing dream!

We were blown away by the flowy sheer maxi dresses, layering upon layering, and practical use of fabrics for Fall/Winter 2011.  Fashion Week isn’t over yet, but we’d like to re-cap some of the great shows and presentations (in alphabetical order) in the first half of Fashion Week so you all are in the know!  Look out for Part 2 later this week plus a list of what you need to buy for Fall/Winter 2011!

1.  Academy of Art University:  Notice a new alien-type of hood.  We like layering with multiple prints, mixing different fabrics/textures, and covering up from head to toe with no skin showing (we believe inspiration came from NY’s harsh winter!).

2.  ADAM:  We like the sheer long sleeve top paired with a maxi and socks/open toe shoes are so hot!  Also love the short sleeve fur over a long sleeve shirt.  Since layering is the way to go, you want to really show all of your layers.  And look at that sheer blouse with the wool knit poncho!

3.  Alexander Wang:  He did a lot of edgy black leather looks.  You’ll also see sheers, glittery pants, satin long fringe skirts, and the tuxedo look in his collection.

4.  BCBGMaxAzria:  All of our favorite looks have the same sheer white turtleneck!  Talk about versatile, we all need to buy that turtleneck!  It’s also a great piece in that you don’t have to look like a nun when it’s cold outside; sheer pieces show just the right amount of skin.  We love the layering again, from gloves and the long sleeved sheer, then the short sleeve coat, topped off with the fur neck piece, brilliant!  Maxi’s and cutout dresses over the turtleneck looks pretty chic too!

5.  Christian Siriano:  He’s so fun, we love him and how he plays around with volume.  It’s always exciting to see what he comes up with.  The ultra sheer black skirt with those shoes are amazing!

6.  Custo Barcelona:  He’s pretty wild!! Lots of prints and a ton of color, but here are some of the more mellow pieces that show great texture layering technique.

7.  Cynthia Steffe:  Elegant looks with fur neck wraps and long leather gloves.  And how cute are those short cheetah gloves?

8. Derek Lam:  Such feminine looks!!  And he does a great job with making women feel like women.  Notice the model smiling in the long gray skirt and mustard top, you know she feels great!

9. Farah Angsana:  The model in blue is stunning and look at those nude shoes!!  Farah is also into luscious furs.

10.  Irina Shabayeva:  There are so many things we love about the cream ruffle dress, the contrast pairing with black tights, the ruffles, the volume, and the fishtail.  We saw alot of the ruffled mini in her looks and we really like the ruffle chiffon blouse.  Also saw a lot of statement jackets with plain black bottoms.

11. Joy Cioci:  We adore these looks!!  Long sheer skirts and those sheer pants are genius!  The heavy knit and fur shawl, the waterfall chiffon ruffle dress with red shoes, and the fur belted vest, we want it all!!!

12.  Luca Luca:  The gorgeous fur color and the feminine sheer pleated skirt were our favorites.  Also check out the military inspired skirt with sashed front pockets.

13.  Mandy Coon:  She did what we call edgy girlyness or rockstar ballerina – mixing leather and fur, bows and ballerina shoes, and soft tie-die!

14.  Max Azria:  We love the mixing of browns and black, the oversized boyfriend coat, the high rise pant, and the boatneck over the mandarin neck look!

15.  Nicholas K:  Super military caravan!  We love the socks with flat boots, the infinity scarve, long ruffled skirts, and the mix of sloppy bottoms and elegant tops, so intriguing!

16.  Norman Ambrose:  Fur and sequin, what eye candy!! And check out the fur shoes and stunning gown!!

17.  Porter Grey:  Bohemian style with long skirts and flat military boots.  As always we’re loving the sock/flat boot combination and high rise pants.

18.  Prabal Gurung:  Prabal’s show was packed with fashionistas as he’s known to be the next Alexander Wang.  His inspiration came from the book “Great Expectations” and they kicked off the show with “Addicted to Love.”  He used lots of red and romantic looks – the big ombre fur coat is gorgeous!  The movement in the long red maxi is spectacular and the ballerina pink outfit is to die for!!!

19.  Rebecca Minkoff:  Our 3 favorite outfits include a sheer maxi dress, what appears to be a shearling coat, and a maxi skirt/blazer combination with ankle boots.

20.  Rebecca Taylor:  We see sheer pants again, sheer dresses and tops, layering, and that sheer pleated gray maxi is so AMAZING!

21.  Richard Chai:  Here we see maxi skirts paired with oversized long coats and we really really like it!  Maxi’s can go with trench coats, boyfriend coats, and double or single breasted coats.

22.  Ruffian:  Elegant victorian evening wear with lots of  ruffles and lace.  We love the joker/clown collars too!

23.  Tadashi Choji:  Looove the long flowy skirts!!  And the heavy ruffled feather black skirt is STUNNING!

24.  Tory Burch:  You’ll see great examples of layering, whether it’s dressy or casual.  Tory also shows an ascot bow in a few of her looks which is very vintage secretary, we like it!

25:  Venexiana:  Women’s evening wear and such eye candy.  These evening gowns and wedding dreses are all so beautiful, wow!!

26.  Zang Toi:  Look at that shot with the emerald green gown!!  We love all of his elegant looks and the hairstyle he chose for the models, so chic!!
